A Step-by-Step Guide to Calibrating Using the Printer Setting Utility for Epson ColorWorks C6000/C6500 Sensors

Why Calibration is Important

Calibration ensures that your printer correctly detects the gaps or blackmarks on your media, which is crucial for accurate printing and media handling.

Step 1: Prepare Your Printer

Before you begin the calibration process, make sure your printer is properly set up and ready to use. Follow these steps to prepare your printer:

1. Power On: Ensure your Epson ColorWorks C6000/C6500 printer is powered on and connected to your computer.
2. Cancel Any Print Jobs in Queue: Cancel all print jobs on the printer by clicking the cancel button and then selecting all label formats.
3. Setting Media Type to Matte Paper: On your printers screen Go to Media Settings then Media Type and select Matte Paper.  We notice if this step was skipped, sometimes users are not able to properly calibrate their printers.

Please note if you are calibrating for the gap sensor on the Epson ColorWorks C6000/6500, ensure the adjustable gap sensor adjustments are correctly positioned to detect the label.  If the sensors are not both in the same position or not lined up with the label this can cause detection errors.

1. Load Media: Load the media you intend to use for calibration.  After this, you will close the lid but keep the printer in pause mode.

Step 2: Setting Media Detect & Accessing the Calibration Option

Before you calibrate the printer, you must tell the printer which label detection method it will use while running the calibration. Otherwise, you may be calibrating a gap sensor instead of a timing mark sensor or vice versa.

1. Click Menu, Media Setting & Media Detect: On the printer’s screen click menu, select media setting and then media detect.  Here, you will find the three options: Gap, Blackmark, or Continuous.

Alternatively, you can also set the media detect in the Epson’s printer properties.

2. Select Gap or Blackmark:  Select the Gap or Blackmark option either in the Epson properties section or on the epson’s screen depending on if you are wanting to calibrate the gap sensor or the blackmark sensor.

3. Go Back Home: Click Okay or if you are using the on screen controllers click the Home Button to return to the Home Page.

4. Document Properties and Choosing Printer Setting:  Open the Printer Properties and select the printer utilities tab then select printer setting utility.

5. Detailed Settings, Advanced Settings: Once the Printer setting window opens select detailed settings then advanced settings.

6. Select Start Calibration: Select the start button across from the adjust media detection sensor text and follow the on screen instructions.

Step 3: Printer Performs the Calibration & Test Print

At this point, the printer will feed your label through the web path and read the values of your label’s timing mark or gap. It will use those values to properly adjust the threshold of the sensors to allow for proper label detection.
You may get a message on screen if the printer calibrates successfully or unsuccessfully.

1. Test Print on Your Labels: After calibration is completed successfully, it is essential to try printing on that label.  This will ensure the sensors are correctly calibrated and help you verify the calibration starts and stops at the correct positions.
2. Check Print Position Offsets: Even after calibration you may need to adjust the print position offsets to perfectly center your prints on the labels.
